CHAMPVA & Military Families
Living alongside service, disability, caregiving or loss shapes a whole family. Your care should account for that, and your coverage shouldn't be the obstacle.
Who CHAMPVA covers
CHAMPVA is the VA's health program for the families of certain veterans. You may be covered if you are one of the following.
Of a veteran rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition.
Of certain veterans who have died, including from a service-connected condition.
Approved through the VA's caregiver program who have no other health insurance.
These two get mixed up all the time. CHAMPVA is a VA program. TRICARE is a Department of Defense program for active-duty and retired service members and their families. If you're eligible for TRICARE, you can't use CHAMPVA. I accept CHAMPVA only, so please check your card before booking.
Not sure which you have, or whether you qualify? CHAMPVA can confirm at 800-733-8387. You can also visit va.gov/champva or read the CHAMPVA Guidebook.
What we can work on
Military-connected families are as varied as any others: Black and BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, kink, poly and ENM. The same affirming, trauma-informed care applies here. You never have to choose between the parts of who you are.
What it costs
Here's a general overview from the VA. Your exact costs depend on your coverage, so CHAMPVA is the best source for your specifics.
Figures from the VA's CHAMPVA Guidebook (2026). For your specific benefits, cost share or any approval requirements, contact CHAMPVA directly at 800-733-8387 (Monday–Friday, 8am–7:30pm ET) or visit va.gov/champva.
