High-Functioning Burnout

A place where you don't have to hold it all together.

For caregivers, helpers, high achievers and the reliable one at work and at home. If you look fine from the outside and feel depleted on the inside, this is space to set the performance down.

What it can look like

Capable on the outside, running on empty.

Overfunctioning

Taking on more than your share because it feels faster, safer or expected.

People-pleasing

Saying yes before you've checked in with yourself, then quietly resenting it.

Perfectionism

A standard that keeps moving, so nothing you do ever feels like enough.

Guilt about resting

Downtime that doesn't feel restful because part of you is still on duty.

When your body sounds the alarm

Poor sleep, headaches, tension, getting sick on vacation and other signs of chronic stress.

Disconnection from yourself

Knowing what everyone else needs, and losing track of what you want.

How we work on it

The parts that keep you going deserve a break too.

High-functioning burnout is often held in place by parts of you that learned early that being capable, helpful or perfect kept you safe. Internal Family Systems helps us understand those parts with respect, so they can ease up without feeling like everything will fall apart.

Somatic approaches help your body come out of constant readiness. Practical tools from CBT, DBT and solution-focused therapy support boundaries, rest and saying no. When old experiences are driving the pattern, EMDR and Brainspotting help process what's underneath.

At every intersection

Burnout isn't only about how much you do.

It's also about what it costs to do it. Masking, code-switching, being the only one in the room, caring for family or holding a community together all add weight that rarely shows up on a to-do list. That weight belongs in the conversation too.

Questions people ask

I'm still functioning. Is it bad enough for therapy?

You don't have to wait until things fall apart. Getting support while you're still standing is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself.

My schedule is packed. How does this fit?

Sessions are virtual, with evening hours Monday through Thursday and morning hours Friday and Saturday, Arizona time.

Is there help with cost?

Yes. I accept Arizona insurance through Headway and Alma, CHAMPVA in all six states, and reduced-fee care through Open Path Collective.
